My Stage Door Memories

Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.
— The Story Girl, L.M. Montgomery

My journey to being a regular at the stage door began with my favourite show Cats the Musical: it was my first introduction to musical theatre and the first large-scale live theatre production I had had the chance to see, and the impact it had on me has a lot to do with how I have come to have such an intense appreciation for the uniqe magic of live theatre and just how speical it is. It wasn't until seeing it in my hometown in 2006 that the possibility of going to the stage door first came up, and it was actually my dad would made the suggestion, not knowing what exactly it was he was starting but seeming to enjoy the absolute astonishment the possibility brought to my face as I processed for the first time in my life that those people who had just created actual magic up on stage could just...leave the theatre after the show as if they were mere mortals. (Theatre people are not, in fact mere mortals after all in my opinion, but they do leave the theatre!) One of the things which I think really stuck with me about going to the stage door that night was actually to do with how I was when I was there. I'm normally a really shy, quiet person unless I'm around a group of people I know well, but when I got to stage door I suddenly had no fear: I said things I would never normally dare say, I was brave enough to step forward and actually ask people to sign my programme and tell them about how much I loved the show, and something about the way theatre people have about them just put me so at ease so quickly. I think that was a huge part of why I was desperate to go back...again and again and again. Cats casts changed and I thought my stage dooring days were over, but somehow the theatre pulled me back in time and time again, with My Jellicles joining new shows for me to support them in and new casts of Cats making me fall in love with my favourite show all over again. I have made so many memories and met so many wonderful humans at the stage door over the years and, if you would like to wander through these pages, I would love to share some of those amazing stories with you.
